#ssm Gay Marriage Albany Wedding Album

Sunday, July 24, 2011 0 comments
I was on hand for the festivities at Albany City Hall Saturday night into Sunday morning: New York is the sixth, and largest, state to legalize same-sex unions. Several other states are considering following suit.
Congrats to all of you couples! Scroll down to the bottom for my musical gift to you!
Six gay and lesbian couples from around the Capital Region were among the first in the state to legally wed under New York’s same-sex marriage law. Mayor Jerry Jennings and Judge Joseph Teresi officiated in Albany. This is what it looked outside City Hall around 11pm, an hour before things got underway...

Lights, cameras... ACTION!

When I first arrived at City Hall, I jokingly mentioned to Dori Marlin that it's been about three years since I last saw her out covering a story. "You're the third person who's told me that tonight," said she... No, she and Dan Levy weren't tying the knot... they were witnessing

Judge Teresi officiating the wedding of an African-American couple who had children with them. I wasn't able to find out who the kids were. Everyone was smiling most of the time, except during those "serious, solemn" moments! Here's the Times Union account of the evening... I mentioned in my radio report that gay rights and human rights activists hope the Empire State's same-sex marriage law will have nationwide impact - that it will impress lawmakers throughout the land, all the way to President Barack Obama. Gay marriage advocates now say they will push for Federal legislation that would require ALL states to recognize same-sex unions.

Mayor Jenning's longtime friends ("Super Secret Couple") Dale Getto and Barbara Laven were married by hizzoner. After the City Hall proceedings, they jumped in a stretch limo and headed up to Saratoga for celebration at Vapor! Congratulations, ladies!

Old chum Dan Levy from NewsChannel 13 takes a seat to jot down a few notes...

Albany City Councilman Anton Konev was on the scene to "witness history." This fellow attends more local events than Brian Scavo!

I love people! Comrades-in-arms Fox23 reporter and cameraman mugged for my smartphone as the crowd began leaving City Hall. Good job, guys!

And here's a musical gift for you Gay Couples! Ronnette's Ronnie Spector with substitute 'nettes Belinda Carlisle (Go-Gos) and Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) with the late great Clarence Clemmons on sax!

Philippines: Netizens follow Telecom merger deal issue

Read this post.
Netizens in the Philippines are closely following the developments of a merger deal between two of the country’s largest telecommunications companies. Some are worried that the merger would be bad for consumers. Here's the gist: The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) announced last March that it has bought off the Digital Telecommunications with P74.1 billion (US$1.7 billion).

If approved by government regulators, there would be two mobile carriers in the country left with PLDT’s Smart, Talk N’Text, Red Mobile and Digitel’s Sun controlling 70 percent of the market and Globe Telecom and TM controlling the remaining 30 percent.

uAlbany Fountain Day 2011

Wednesday, April 6, 2011 0 comments

Old traditions die hard! There may be A FOUNTAIN DAY 2011 after all. The event was cancelled after a small number of uAlbany students trashed a city neighbordhood in a St. Patrick's Day KEGS & EGGS melee! Students are trying to get the event back on the calendar, and they're using social networking to spread the word!

Ripped from FACEBOOK:
****NOTE**** This is not official yet until it is cleared by the SA and more so the school itself, so please don't get hopes up. I will let you all know when and if this becomes official.

This school needs redemption, Us...the Students, need redemption. This city is looking at UA like we are a bunch of animals. We need to prove to the city, the school, and the rest of the world that we are not a bunch of drunk rioting animals. Lets organize a student ran event that can be host to much musical performances for up and coming artist, for new Student groups on campus looking to raise awareness for different things. Lets donate our proceeds back the the city of Albany to show them we do belong here, and that we are a bunch of smart, well developed, mature, professional college students...all while having a ton of fun!

Water guns, Water balloons, buckets, music, food, positive vibes and everything in between. Lets put our own twist on fountain day. Lets be the first class to introduce WATER-FEST. Lets show the city of Albany that we CAN do good things. Let's show them we aren't just a bunch of dumb college kids who riot for no reason.

-Our goal is to provide a positive and fun option for everyone this spring.

-T-Shirts, bags of pre-filled water balloons, and food will all be sold.

PROCEEDS WILL HOPEFULLY BE DONATED BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AS REPARATIONS FOR THE KEGS N EGGS RIOTS.

-We will try to get the school involved (Students Association) and make this event for a purpose to raise awareness for a special cause like cyber bullying or something like that.

-Obviously you're outraged by the cancellation of Fountain Day. This is an alternative to the hand our student body has been dealt. If you would like to help out by volunteering or setting up/organizing it would be MUCH appreciated.

- All UALBANY students are welcome.

- We are inviting all clubs, DJs/ Bands/ Organizations that would like to be involved.

-Contact Jimmy Forgione for further details or questions.
If this does go down its happening on the same day as Park-Fest, April 30th.

Analog Social Networking with Professionals in the City

Who knows? Maybe we'll meet in person and share a New Year DC moment!

What if facebook were to suddenly close up shop? (It could happen!) Would Linked-In step in to fill the void? I don't really think so, because LinkedIn plays to a very targeted professional niche. So if you alreaady belong to either facebook, LinkedIn, or both, there's a social network that you can avail yourself of which operates in the real world, as opposed to the virtual ones.

Established by Michael Karlan, Professionals in the City is a vast social and networking organization. The group has more than 200,000 members, offering a wide variety of events across the major cities served, which include Baltimore, Washinton DC, Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia. A typical event ranges from as few as 20 attendees to more than 2,000.

Now, although the group does host some singles events, it is not a singles club or organization. Many people prefer to attend the events alone, while others are joined by friends, spouses, significant others, or with people they have met at previous Professionals in the City events.

If you go through the website you'll see a lot of dates for events in the future. The time to plan for your fun and successful future is NOW! For example, how many times have you said to yourself while watching New Year's Eve celebrations on TV "I'm gonna be there next year." Have you thought of doing New Years Eve Washinton DC style? YOU can make it happen!

Professionals in the City has planned events to welcome in 2012

Membership is a breeze! All you have to do is sign up once to receive thier weekly emails. From then on, membership is free and you will be kept up-to-date on all the wonderful opportunities being planned in your area.

And you can be a member at your own preference or "comfort level" --- they have different groups covering different age ranges. The core group is comprised of individuals primarily between the ages of 25 and 45, but theye also hold separate events for people ages 21 to 29 and for people ages 35 and up. The company website notes "The age ranges are simply suggested parameters to help you find the group most suitable for you and the events that you will feel most comfortable attending."

Now that you're gone...

Now that Michelle Malkin has left Seattle to pick up the broken pieces of her life (her cousin Marizela Perez, as of this writing, is still missing), the locals are spewing venom: raking MM over the coals on just about every front on every topic imaginable before the online audience at seattleweekly.com.

All thanks to a post that appeared on the mainstream Seattle Weekly site, allegedly written by a Curtis Cartier.

A very unflattering picture of MM appears with the post. I've posted a nice one for you. And if you hover and click you'll see where it originated.

Hmmmm... wonder if Cartier is the author of the one of the anti-Michelle Malkin blogs (maybe Cartier GHOSTwrites for one or more of them!)

There must be a list of "talking points" for anti-Malkinites posted somewhere that the haters all go to!

Now if you or someone you know is anywhere near Milwaukee, here's an excerpt from an e-mail dispatched by the Marquette College Republicans:
The MUCRs have confirmed political pundit, author, and blogger Michelle Malkin will speak on campus Monday, April 11th at 7:00 pm followed by a book signing. This event is being supported by the MU Student Activities Fund as well as Young America’s Foundations Reagan 100 Speaker Series. Tickets are available in the Brooks Lounge on the first floor of the Alumni Memorial Union (1442 Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee). There is a limit of two tickets per person. The MUCRs are very excited about this event and to host another New York Times Bestseller this academic year. In November, Global Warming Expert Christopher Horner spoke to a crowd at Marquette.
Michelle’s blog is here. Like all conservative women, she is the sort of person liberals love to hate. MSNBC’s Keith Olberman once referred to her as a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick.”

Says the Mu-Warrior Blog: "Anybody who elicits such a deranged response from Oberman is worth seeing..."

The event will be held in the rear room behind the Utopian Directions bookstore at 7 West Street in Warwick at 4:00 p.m. on April 2. Following the feature, others are welcome to read original work. Admission is free.

Clemente is known not only as an original and compelling poet, but as the producer of the Read for Food Series that raises money for local food pantries. He locates himself in the region’s time-line as “young enough to have missed Woodstock and old enough to remember the mothballed WWII fleet that was moored for years in the Hudson River’s mountainous Haverstraw Bay.” Professionally, Clemente is a scientist with the DEC.

Bill Clinton at UAlbany

Thursday, March 3, 2011 0 comments
Although I haven't been well the last few days, I didn't feel like sitting around the house or calling in sick to work, especially with President Bill Clinton scheduled to speak in Albany. You can barely see him in this fuzzy cellphone pic I snapped from the media area. (Hover and click on the pic for higher res shots taken by University photographer Mark Schmidt) Those up-close pix you see on TV and in the papers were taken from the same spot, by reporters and camera operators armed with telescopic lenses!

Wednesday night was very cold, with a icy wind and a touch of snow in the air as I headed out to the University campus. Although I arrived before the 7pm media check-in time, I parked what seemed like miles from the SEFCU arena. (Getting OUT of the parking lot later was tantamount to a 'Keystone Kops' episode. Authorities looped traffic around and back in a confusing fashion instead of allowing what should have been a relatively normal but bumper-to-bumper flow. It wasn't too bad for me, but many other drivers were frustrated!)

It is difficult when you have a prolific speaker like President Clinton to go through minutes and minutes of recorded audio and pick out highlights when the entire speech is in itself a highlight. I could have filled 20 minutes, but squeezed what I could into 4 and a half. Albany County Executive Mike Breslin was among regional officials attending the Clinton speech, which he called "an amazingly optimistic approach to where we are in the world today." And indeed it was. The spark of optimism burned thru each and every person who had sat in that auditorium as they made their way into the cold night. The words of change and hope for the future will stick in everyone's memory, I'm sure.

The Times Union mentioned one of the topics I had to pass on: the volatile situation in the Arab world right now. Clinton said he was concerned about Middle East because people try to hijack every revolution. He said democracy could flourish in those countries and praised the young people for risking their lives to bring it about peaceably. He closed the topic with a "wait and see" flavor applied... had the media been granted access to the President, I'm certain that would have been one of the items Mr. Clinton would have been asked a zillion questions about.

A 2010 Wall Street Journal/NBC news poll determined Clinton is regarded as the most popular politician in the United States.

PS - if anyone finds a "Bill Clinton UAlbany Transcript" link, please drop it in the "comments" area below! THANKS!

Fatwa: Kill Colonel Khadafi! (So we won't have to worry how to spell his name correctly)

Tuesday, February 22, 2011 0 comments
Gadhafi: "Hell no, I won't go!"

Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi vows “to fight to the last drop of blood” as clashes intensify between rebels and his loyalists in the capital, Tripoli and witnesseses describe the streets as a "war zone."

Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi issued a fatwa on Monday that any Libyan soldier who can shoot dead embattled leader Moamer Kadhafi should do so "to rid Libya of him." This is on the level of, let's imagine, Justin Bieber telling kids to burn any Christine Aguilera CDs they find around the house... :::MoRe:::

Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro warned Tuesday that unrest in Libya may be a pretext for a NATO invasion. Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega has jumped to the support of the embattled leader of the North African nation, saying he telephoned to express solidarity. Qadafy says he's standing his ground. (And won't back down, adds Tom Petty).

World stocks fell on Tuesday as the growing revolt in Libya drove crude prices to 30-month highs in New York and London [prices for North Sea Brent LCOc1 touched $108.57 a barrel before paring some gains], prompting fears the unrest could spread to other major oil suppliers in the region and harm global growth. Gas prices are skyrocketing.

al-Qaradawi, The Muslim Brotherhood & The Future

Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments
Muslim televangelist Yusuf al-Qaradawi says he knows what the Muslim Brotherhood in Egpyt thinks -- and he provides clues to how they might act. A profile in Germany's Der Spiegel called him the "Muslim Dear Abby." He made an appearance in Cairo on Friday.

Washington may reconsider the Muslim Brotherhood and engage with the moderate Islamist movement. Or not...

The Society of the Muslim Brothers (often simply الإخوان Al-Ikhwān, The Brotherhood or MB) is an Islamic transnational movement and the largest political opposition organization in many Arab states. The group is the world's oldest and largest Islamic political group, founded in 1928 by Hasan al-Banna, a 22-year-old elementary school teacher, as an Islamic revivalist movement in Egypt, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The group has followers in 70+ countries. The Brotherhood was not the lead actor in the demonstrations in Egypt leading up to the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, but it played an important supporting role and made a conscious effort not to hijack the revolution away from idealistic young people brought together by social networking.
Related: A Young Girl's Response to Anti-Islamic Sentiment in the USA.
Readers can get a better understanding of the Muslim Brotherhood influence in America by reviewing Sayyid Qutb’s works ‘Milestones’ [ pdf ] and ‘In The Shade of The Quran’ (15 volumes, also downloadable in pdf form here). Chris Gaubatz has written "My Life Inside CAIR and The Muslim Brotherhood" - in which he purports to reveal the true aim of the organization.

A Look At The Youth Of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

Journalist Charles Sennott recently returned from Tahrir Square, where he was filming a documentary on the revolution for PBS's Frontline. It focuses on the young members of the Muslim Brotherhood [official website] who played an important role in Egypt's revolution. [Audio report].

So where exactly is all this leading to? It's that little bug of social revolution, of political upheaval, of "time for a change." Once it gets momentum going, it is very difficult to stop.

We cannot and should not FEAR change, but we can ACCEPT it and DEAL WITH IT! Remember, nothing is forever!

#Egypt #Jan25 Collaborate.Participate.Connect

Saturday, February 12, 2011 0 comments
The Egyptian Revolution was not simply televised: it was open to all via the power of social media... think "interactive!"
Unlike most revolutions until now, there was no central leader or political party or union boss or military wing or anything driving what happened last week. It truly was "the will of the people" who gathered and grouped and organized in a spirit of democracy. And even when things looked very dark [thrice: (1) The day when Mubarak realized that part of what made the revolution in Tunisia successful was the instant communication between its people via cell-phone texting and Twitter, prompting him to cell-phone & internet communications (2) the day the "Mubarak thugs" attacked and tried to frighten demonstrators and then (3) the day Mubarak was expected to resign but didn't] they stayed on and carried the desire for a new beginning higher and higher...

Once upon a time revolutionaries were defined by their cause:

The Russian Revolution of 1917, a series of events in imperial Russia that culminated in 1917 with the establishment of what would become the U.S.S.R. began with people calling for a better, fairer government. Their numbers grew from hyndreds to thousands without the aid of the internet or mobile telephones. While the new media played a major role in the failed uprising in Iran and the successful ones in Tunisia and Egypt, the foundations and framework of traditional activism must be present because it is the very glue that holds the revolutionaries together.

Any revolution is at its most dangerous, delicate point immediatley after "the people" have gained victory. To borrow a bit of Star Trek terminology, Egypt's deflector shields are down right now, the same way shields were down in Russia in 1917 and China in 1949. The 1949 Chinese Revolution was a transformative, epochal event, not only for the Chinese but for the rest of humanity, as well. The same can be said of the Cuban Revolution, a successful armed revolt by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement that overthrew the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Change may not be permanent, but it sure can last a long time. Ask anybody in Bejing. Or Havana. Or St. Petersburg. Read what Jim Haygood has to say about the story behind the Egyptian revolution:
"Sociologists will need to analyze the demographic antecedents of the Egyptian revolution. A high growth rate, youth-tilted population with elevated unemployment and access to global media (showing more privileged youth elsewhere) is like a Petri dish for revolution."
It appears that now, presidential contenders are beginning to emerge as Egypt's political future struggles in the flux. Like the primaries leading up to the US presidential election, it will take a little time for the field to narrow enough for a few leaders with the greatest potential to take center stage. There are approx. 8 or 9 names being tossed about right now... stay tuned, "The revolution" will be back, right after these messages...

Egypt exploded with joy, tears, and relief after President Hosni Mubarak resigned as president. Crowds in Cairo, the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and other cities around the country danced, chanted "goodbye, goodbye," and raised their hands in prayer in an ecstatic pandemonium as fireworks and car horns sounded after Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on national TV just after nightfall.

The video blog made and shared on Facebook by Asmaa Mahfouz, where she asked Egyptians to join her on January 25th to protest and ask for human rights went viral, and is being called “The Vlog that Helped Spark the Revolution”, according to Iyad El-Baghdadi.
