How secure and how private will human life be?

Students already face withdrawl and distress when deprived of internet connectivity. One person surveyed said that being deprived of the internet was “like having my hand chopped off.” Others said it was akin to giving up drinking and smoking. Many of them experienced feelings of sadness or loneliness even if denied online access for a short time.

I've often remarked that "if the internet crashed civilization would come to a halt" - we have become far too dependent on the net for everything! FROM EDUCATION TO ENTERTAINMENT TO GAMES AND PASTTIMES!

Smartphone sales Will reach 420 Million by the end of 2011. At what point will we receive chip-like implants to directly connect our brains to the internet? Will that become the Biblical "mark of the beast"?

Beware of bloggers who re-tweet "old posts!" There's a lot of misinformation and some very bad advice circulating concerning twitter, the popular microblogging via SMS service.

Let's clear things up straightaway!

(1) The number of followers you have is NOT important, nor should you be concerned about it, UNLESS you yourself are following many more than are following you in return. For example, if 100 people are following you and you are following 50, that's fine. But if you are following 500, there is a problem. I personally follow 300. That's my cap, for reasons I have explained previously.

See somebody with thousands of followers? Unless they are a celebrity, those are JUNK followers that perhaps they purchased.

(2) Here's a bit of bad advice making the rounds via "re-tweet" - If you think you need to UNfollow peeps, BE CAREFUL! I advise against un-following "tools" like untweeps ::: here's why: I follow Karl Lagenfeld and MIA. Both tweet rarely. I would never want to UNfollow them.

A better method is to use twitgether in conjunction with Google or Facebook. You can click on a link to see if someone is following you back or not. This gives you complete control over the unfollowing process!

(3) If you want to KEEP your existing followers, DO NOT USE AUTO-RETWEETING SERVICES!
Case in point:
Dragonblogger is a great guy and serious about his online activities. But please - who cares about a three-year old post about entrecards, especially when Dragonblogger no longer participates in the program?

He shot me back an email:
This is a side effect of the Tweet Old Post Wordpress plugin, I am still going through and finding which articles to edit and put in categories that won't auto tweet. However, I forgot to limit my posts to not retweet anything over 360 days. Eventually this will become 6 months, and 3 months but only after enough posts publish per day.

I did create a "Archive" category that Tweet Old Post ignores, but didn't put 100% of everything I don't want tweeting in it yet. I don't tweet my contest category so old contests never autotweet as that would be pointless.

The fact that 8 out of 10 posts are valid a year later and still could reach a new audience are still worth more than the occasional "useless post". Useless posts are simply ignored, they rarely make people unfollow. My follower count has been relatively static, I don't get very many unfollows on a weekly basis and I auto tweet every 4 hours an old article.

But folks, DON'T YOU TRY THIS AT HOME! Justin is a pro who knows what he's doing, and he'll work it out. Most tweeters get into something like this and have no clue as to how to get out!

I don't get it. I ride the bus every day and I'm always baffled as to why passengers thank the driver when they get off at their stop. Thank-you. Thanks for what? For letting me off the bus when I pulled the cord? For not getting into an accident along the way? For accepting my fare in the wake of increasingly poor service?

The bus driver is likely the highest-paid annual wage earner aboard the vehicle. He should be thanking US for giving him a cush job where he can sit all day long as he tools around town.

Pictured: a "600 series" GM motor coach, used by CDTA's private sector predecessor, United Traction Company. These small-diesel powered workhorses were so efficient and economical, they remained in daily use through the 1970s!

Let's see how many people are thankful come this fall when CDTA "revises" bus routes. Based on previous performance, here's what they'll possibly do:

(1) eliminate more bus stops like they've done in the past, especially where a disabled person or a small child may have been getting on, forcing them to walk a long distance under sometimes treacherous conditions to get to an "official" stop - especially in a suburban area - or smaller town

(2) extend some routes to enable busses to pollute more and damage roadways - like the Second Avenue line. It was extended over Whitehall Road to St. Peter's Hospital. The noisy vehicles whiz by with a single passenger (most of the time they're empty) and badly damaged a portion of Hackett Boulevard, where a cement slab had to be put down to accomodate them. (The buses draw traffic from the #9 Whitehall Road bus, and I'll betcha the CDTA is going to announce #9 is shutting down because "fares are down" because about ten people a day hop aboard the Second Ave. line, because they travel about a minute in front of #9)

A more LOGICAL thing to do: KEEP #9 because it's the only way one might travel from Whitehall Road to near Central Avenue (get off at Partridge, Quail or Lake) without having to pay more $$$ for another bus, since the transfer system was abolished. And why not EXTEND #9 at the Morton Avenue area to run all the way down Morton and over South Pearl instead of crossing Eagle?

NOW I "get it" ::: CDTA just doesn't get it.

Let's hope they don't raise bus fare again.

You "thank-you" folks would be smarter to run out and hug and thank the guys who take your garbage out on trash day.

I was moved to comment on one of these "Google expert" articles. I wrote (see image above) that bloggers shouldn't act like lemmings and walk off digital cliffs on the say-so of Rowse or Rubel.

On former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's inaugaration coronation day, I recall feeling embarassment when the media (particularly burned in my memory: a reporterette in a red dress, fawning over the new king) praised and generously covered the event as if it were the Second coming. I remember thinking to myself "something's not right about this." My suspicions were borne out in time, when the Governor resigned.

Fast Forward to July 3, 2011. Talk of Andrew Cuomo running as the Vice Presidential candidate along with Barack Obama. Really? At this moment in time, President Barack Obama seems to have a rough road ahead in 2012. (Or maybe not - a lot depends on the quality of his Republican opponent).

This is not the first instance of chatter about Andrew as VP material. Political observers were making predictions about this back in April.

Since Marriage Equality passed in New York, the name "Andrew Cuomo" is vocalized with much excitement. Democrats, let's not get carried away. Keep in mind, Cuomo is the guy who drove the bus on gay marriage in New York. The question is: how will this set with voters throughout the Southern states?

Before we go teaming Andrew up with Barack, we need to poll the South. While it may be true that national attitudes regarding gay marriage have changed significantly, and much of the opposition comes from people over age 60, there's a LARGE concentration of elderly folks down from the Carolinas through Florida. Georgia, especially Atlanta, would probably have no problem with Cuomo. Over in Miss. and Alabama may be a different story. Then there's Texas (and New Mexico). The land of "real men" or "he men" - a land where gay pride perhaps has a softer voice.

Blog commenting (which some have mainstreamed as blog hopping) is all about being social (yep – more on that in a sec) with your fellow blogger neighbors. It is about contributing, enhancing, developing.

It is not about taking, promoting and getting all jiggy with your wants and desires.

Do I enter my website when I leave a comment? Do I use CommentLuv when it is available on a blog?

Yes – you bet your ass I do."

FRANK: We are all tempted to join up with the newest wizz bang phenomenon that is ready to take Social Media by storm. The newest craze comes on like a hot chick in a short skirt and lasts about as long as Aunt Gertrude in her flannel PJ’s. But, by god, we are going to join it!

Every time you do that you contribute to your Goggle (SP) paper trail.

ME : I don't think people pay all that much attention to the "paper trail" as you describe it! I joined twitter and facebook when they were brand spankin' new and forgot all about 'em - until the day they were 'hot" and I went to sign up and found I already had an account WITH THE EXACT NAME I WANTED! Rejoice!

FRANK: Social Media is about being social. It is about relationships, engagement and interaction. It is all about being a real person in a real way with other real people and their real life concerns, desires, needs and dreams.

Let me just say it straight out – if you cannot have a decent, respectful, engaging conversation with your next door neighbor and then translate that over to Social Media – heaven help you.

We don’t “do” Social Media as bloggers. We are a part of a HUGE community and we should treat each other like community members.

ME : The Blog neighborhood is not a Communist "Utopia" - just as disagreements in real life are part of analog life, they appear in digital life as well! You gotta deal with it, baby!

Could Barack Obama LOSE the US Presidency in 2012?

Some people think so. People like Karl Rove::: "Approval among younger voters has dropped 22 points, and it's dropped 20 points among Latinos. Even African-American voters are less excited about Mr. Obama than they were—and than he needs them to be. For example, if their share of the turnout drops just one point in North Carolina, Mr. Obama's 2008 winning margin there is wiped out two and a half times over."

So if Obama could lose the elction, who might win it? John Hogue seems to be rooting for Rick Perry.

In case you are wondering what may follow...

PBS recently aired Two Spirits, the concluding episode of this season's Independent Lens series, which detailed the traditional Navajo belief that there we are living in a many-gendered world, one that includes many more sexes that just male and female. It was an amazing broadcast!

Filmmaker Lydia Nibley seeks to explain the Navajo idea of the nádleehí, which translates in English to "one who constantly transforms." Their culture, along with other Native American heritages, believe there's at least four genders: male, female, male with a feminine essence, and female with a masculine essence. I thought that we were all done with ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner, roasted to a crisp by bloggers and the mainstream media. But now that the Rep is Rep-no-more, the attention has turned toward his wife, Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

The story reminds me of a junkyard dog who somehow, inexplicably scored a fresh bone from the butcher shop that had a little meat on it. The dog becomes reluctant to let the bone go, even after it is old and dry.

The move to hang Huma apparently began when someone translated this article:

Other bloggers and columnists are taking a different approach to Huma, viewing Ms. Abedin as a candidate for Weiner's now vacant seat.

Not too long ago, theorists fretted that the Internet was a place where anonymity thrived. Now, it seems, it is the place where anonymity dies. That boxful of chips and circuits can do a lot of damage (ask ex-Rep. Weiner) and cannot be stopped.

The Revolution Will Not be Televised. It will be tweeted and blogged and smartphones will take pictures of it and send them to everyone.

The Internet and partners-in-crime computers & smartphones have made the public sphere more public than ever before and have the power to project personal lives into public view. Web sites like Facebook, which require real identities and encourage the sharing of photographs and videos, have helped chip away at anonymity and personal protection online.

“Publicity” — something normally associated with celebrities — “is no longer scarce,” Dave Morgan, the chief executive of Simulmedia, writes: "Virtually everything that you do outside the secure confines of your home is not only public -- as it's always been -- but is now recorded by the hundreds of millions of connected devices with digital cameras, and is being uploaded and made available to everyone else in the world in searchable databases. This is the growing reality of our digital networked world."

That's a network of unblinking eyes connected to recorders that will never forget anything they see.

Does this happen to you too? You read a great blog post, compose a great comment, and you can't leave it.

#1 Always compose your comment in notepad ::: that way if the blog commenting system rejects it or freezes, you still have your comment. Maybe you could use it as the basis for a blog post on your own blog (I do this all the time!)

If you really think you need a 3rd party comments app, I would say of the various services out there, INTENSE DEBATE has been reliable 99.9% of the time. Facebook comments are very unsteady, apparently targeted toward hardcore facebookers who hang on the social network all day 24/7. Disqus really sucks, and the app like the one the blog below uses work maybe half the time, if at all. And I wonder if the blogger knows about this?

#2 Let the blog author know - someway, somehow... maybe just by linking back to the article you tried to leave a comment on... Here's what happened a few minutes ago when I tried to leave a comment on POWERLINE blog via facebook log-in: a bit fat FREEZE!

As "cloud computing" and the "infographics" movements press forward in a veiled effort to herd the sheeple, the lines are being drawn for an intellectual showdown that could end up in the great dumbdown of society via the internet.

A Scottish university last night suspended the computer privileges of a male American student who set up the "Gay Girl In Damascus" hoax blog purporting to be written by a gay woman detained by Syrian authorities.

Slate reports that the editor of lesbian news website Lezgetreal.com — who encouraged Arraf and republished her blog entries — was a man named Bill Graber who used the name Paula Brooks as an online persona.

Graber confirmed his identity to The Associated Press, saying "LezGetReal was not meant to be deceitful or con anyone."

Andy Carvin should have titled his storify article "How to Make A Complete Fool of The Media" - check out his blog and see all the credibility being lost as we make our way faster and faster toward digital idiocy!

"A Gay Girl in Damascus" should teach the media (as well as the legions of bloggers who fell for the Amina Arraf tale) the other part of the lesson it failed to learn from the likes of Jayson Blair (who reimagined himself as a "reality enhancer"), Janet Cooke, and their ilk: CHECK and RE-CHECK!

Infographics, Instagram are for iDiots!

In the weeks to come you'll be hearing more and more (if you haven't already) about INFOGRAPHICS being "the next big thing" - and they are - for small-minded people with limited attention spans who need information presented tot hem in easy-to-understand picture form. As books and newspapers begin to disappear, and cloud-computing comes of age, will we witness a time when letters and words give way to pictures and infographics?

Think it about it. Someone looking at this page in the deep future (assuming the files are not deleted) may not be able to read it!

More "online reputation" stuff...

I'm at Saki Tumi's in NYC, reading the New York Times. A Paul Sullivan article compares the "web" (who uses that god-awful term anymore, except maybe for AOL?) to an elephant, in that "it never forgets."

TRUE... BUT... Gennette Cordova was voted by classmates as the person "most likely to end up in a tabloid" and she fulfilled her destiny. She'll do just fine.

Paul, right out of the gate I can think of a case where details of at least one human being with ties to the Capital Region were scrubbed from your "web" and where there's one there are likely more.

I'm sure, Paul, you spent a lot of time thinking about, gathering info and structuring your article. But if our pal Rep. Anthony Weiner stays in office, this is all MOOT!

You see, already the media has moved on to Sarah Palin's e-mails. And somebody is reporting that in Weiner's district, his constituents say they'll re-elect him. (Keyword is "reporting" - all the newspaper polls I have seen show 75-95% of the respondents want Weiner OUT) I can report Paul, that "everybody thinks Paul Sullivan should write a book" and after awhile you'd think so too! As the passage of time seperates us from the weiner circus, his chances of surviving this gets better and better --- good news for all of those concerned about "online repuations".

In any event, it's nice to know that ove can BUY BACK his or her reputation.

After Breitbart hijacked the surrealistic Weiner press event, and then Rep. Anthony Weiner tearfully refused to resign, I got to thinking.

What does this event teach us and our children?

[update] FUN FACTS ::: In 2007, Weiner co-sponsored the “Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators Act.” Doug Powers grills more Weiner on Michelle Malkin's blog!

That Congressman Chris Lee was a WIMP in all caps! And that CRAIGSLIST should be avoided at all costs!

Lee was a western NY politician who resigned in February after reports emerged that he had sent flirtatious e-mails, including one with a bare-chested photo of himself, to a woman he met on Craigslist. (LIST is bad! remember the Craigslist killer? And all the Hookers on the list?)

Lee! What a bastard, eh? But Lee, in the end, was a big clucking chicken who got all nervous and resigned from office.

Not our good ol' Rep. Weiner! With a yfrog/twitter picture portfolio that would put Lee to shame, Weiner will stay on the grill! The french got nothin' on him! And we all LOVE to tweet and upload pictures!

Weiner proves to citizens of other nations that at least one US elected official has a BACKBONE, Breitbart be damned!

Secretary of State aide Huma Abedin may be the next "Good Wife" to launch a mad crackdown on her hubby: she may have some "competition" ... or not ...

With everything going on these days, like Arnold, Tiger Woods, the mad Frenchman and the hotel maid, the political fellow from western NY who sent out shirtless pix of himself... this isn't really surprising!

21-year old College coed Gennette Cordova (aka "Gennette Nicole" Cordova, a student at Whatcom Community College, Bellingham, Wash., where she is a reporter for the student newspaper, Horizon) got a XXX photo from Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter account! She says she never met him in person, but admitted to being "a fan". The Daily News points out ::: Some right-wing bloggers insist it must be proof that Weiner was having an affair with Cordova, who had once jokingly Tweeted: "I wonder what my boyfriend @RepWeiner is up to."

Cordova issued a lengthy statement [ReAd it HeRe], complaining about how she's been characterized on blogs and other web sites.

Rep. Weiner insists a "hacker" sent photos to "Genette Nicole" ---

THE PLOT THICKENS:::
Liz Benjamin: “The woman to whom the picture was sent has since deleted both her Facebook and Twitter accounts. Very odd.”

Yeah... why would she delete her accounts ??? That's a move of DESPERATION...

And apparently, there's been an effort underway to erase the name “Gennette Cordova” off the Internet — even having her byline removed from articles she wrote for her college newspaper!

Century I, Quatrain 64
At night they will think they have seen the sun,

In 2011 we could interpret the "half pig man" to be the product of genetic technology (or a guy who has had pig blood vessels installed to replace his own damaged ones). The point here, is that as we catch up to the future, we are better able to look back and understand the past. In 1960, the genetic possibility would likely not have been explored, nor even thought of.

Watching the PBS-Television series "Freedom Riders" the other night with a 14-year old in the room. A young teen who stared at the screen, incredulous - unable to understand the racial divide portrayed in the episode being played - I tried to explain.

There were things thought impossible then (only 50 years ago) - things like a black president, telephones we could carry in our pockets, same-sex marriage. Things are more things that are part of reality now.

The young person(s) watching "Freedom Riders: will likely see many things come to pass in their own lifetimes that they cannot even begin to conceive of today.

"Farms" where human replacement parts are grown. A meteor striking the earth causing mass devastation. An invasion by a technologically superior race of beings from a distant planet. Men marrying animals.

It almost hurts the mind to think about things like that, does it not?
